FSC Names New Dean of the School of Nursing

Dr. John M. Welton
Dean of the School of Nursing and
Health Sciences

LAKELAND, Fla. (April 26, 2010) — Florida Southern College President Anne Kerr has announced that John M. Welton, Ph.D., has been appointed Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Dr. Welton comes to FSC from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Nursing, where he was a faculty chair and track coordinator in nursing administration. While at MUSC, Dr. Welton won numerous awards, including the prestigious South Carolina League for Nursing Award for Excellence; the South Carolina Governor's Distinguished Professor Award; and the Medical University of South Carolina's Educator/Lecturer of the Year.

Dr. Welton is internationally recognized for his work in nursing intensity, nursing economics and workforce issues, and nursing administration, and has published extensively and consulted and presented widely for professional, health care, higher education, and corporate organizations. He has worked closely with colleagues in the American Organization of Nurse Executives to change national health policy to recognize the economic value of nursing care, and he serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Nursing Administration. He has a substantial clinical background in critical care and flight nursing and operated an air ambulance company earlier in his career.

He holds a bachelor of science in nursing from Skidmore College, a master of science in nursing administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a doctorate in nursing with a minor in medical informatics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Welton will join Florida Southern on June 1, 2010.
