LAKELAND, Fla. (Dec. 21, 2009) — Florida Southern College conferred degrees on 171 graduates at the winter commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 19, in Brascomb Auditorium.

Graduating were seniors from the college's traditional day program, the Lakeland evening program, and the Orlando and Ocala programs. Twenty-nine students received their master's degrees.

Two graduates, Rachel Adair Cook of Lakeland and Verletta Patrice Jackson, were awarded the prestigious Presidents Scholar Medals for outstanding academics and distinguished citizenship.

The College also awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, to Lester Wishnatzki, a Lakeland philanthropist and national leader and innovator in the strawberry business.

The commencement address was delivered by Judge E.J. Salcines, a 1959 graduate of FSC and member of the College's Board of Trustees. Judge Salcines has served on the 2nd District Court of Appeal since 1998. Judge Salcines reminded the graduates to thank those who made their success possible. "Life is a team effort," he said. "No one does it alone. ... Don't forget to thank your teachers, friends, and others who helped you along the way and do it today, before you leave this campus."
