Florida Southern College to Observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day
LAKELAND, Fla. (Jan. 14, 2009) — The Multicultural Student Council at Florida Southern College will hold a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day from 7 to 9 p.m. January 19 at the Pipkin Bandshell off Ingraham Avenue on the FSC campus. The event will feature live entertainment, clips from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and a keynote address by Dr. Edwin Plowman, professor of sociology at FSC. The public is invited to attend. Dr. Plowman, who has taught classes in race relations for more than 40 years, was a student volunteer in the civil rights movement and attended many of Dr. King’s inspiring speeches. Dr. Plowman met members of Dr. King’s family and marched with several of Dr. King’s assistants, including Ralph Abernathy and Andrew Young. He also met many other civil rights leaders while writing his doctoral dissertation on race relations and the civil rights movement. Plowman’s speech is titled, “An Appreciation of the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." For more information about the celebration, please contact Brenda Lewis at 680-6285 or blewis@flsouthern.edu. |
