LAKELAND, Fla. (Nov. 20, 2008) -- The Florida Southern College forensic team returned from a double tournament at New York University with 11 wins in eight individual events and fifth- and sixth-place team sweepstake awards.

Senior Jordan Stout and juniors Krista Miller, Tony Rivera, and Shay Lessman took part in the season closer over the weekend of Nov. 14, competing in 13 events against heavy hitters such as New York University, Cornell, University of Texas, Houston, and others.

In the first leg of the tournament, Ms. Miller walked away with a first-place finish in “After Dinner Speaking” and a fifth-place finish in “Dramatic Duo” with her partner, Mr. Rivera. Mr. Stout placed fifth in “After Dinner Speaking” and fourth in “Programmed Oral Interpretation.”

“This has been a great semester for Krista,” said Dr. Christopher Fenner, director of forensics and the team’s coach. “After she took first place in ‘Dramatic Interpretation’ at the FSC tournament, I was very happy to see her take first place in another event.”

The team continued to perform well in the second leg of the tournament, with Mr. Rivera making strides in two events, breaking into finals with a fifth-place finish in “Informative Speaking” and fourth place in “Dramatic Duo” with Ms. Miller.

Some healthy competition among team members fueled a third-place finish for Mr. Stout in “After Dinner Speaking,” with Ms. Miller placing fourth in the event. Mr. Stout broke into “Programmed Oral Interpretation” again, with a sixth-place finish. Mr. Lessman turned in a consistent performance, finishing third in “Communication Analysis” in both legs of the tournament and gaining ground in “Poetry Interpretation.”

The New York University tournament closes the fall season for the forensic team. Next semester, FSC will be host to the Florida state championship, and students will compete at tournaments at the regional and national level.

The Florida Southern forensic team was founded through a generous grant by local businessman C.C. “Doc” Dockery. For more information on intercollegiate forensics, please contact Dr. Fenner at cfenner@flsouthern.edu.
