LAKELAND, Fla. (May 12, 2008) — Dr. Carmen Gauthier, chemistry professor and chair of the science and mathematics division at Florida Southern College, received two awards during a high school lab program hosted by the college on April 18. The awards were presented in recognition of her efforts on behalf of the Florida Section of the American Chemical Society.

For her work during National Chemistry Week, Gauthier received the National Chemistry Week Coordinator appreciation award. In addition, she received a "Salutes to Excellence" Award sponsored by the Office of Community Activities of the American Chemical Society. She received a plaque that reads, "For her tireless dedication and commitment to high school teachers and their students, for bettering society through creative chemical education, and for exciting and inspiring future generations of scientists."

"I am deeply touched by this award but I could not have earned it without the enthusiastic support of my students, the teachers and my colleagues,” said Gauthier. “It is this type of recognition that fuels us to continue promoting science education at all levels."
