FSC's President Kerr and City Commissioner Wiggs shoot hoops for a worthy cause

LAKELAND, Fla. (March 24, 2008) — The Florida Southern College Sports Management Club has recruited two teams of community leaders to face off on the basketball court for The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. The FSC College Sports Management Club Inaugural Charity Basketball Game will be held at the Jenkins Field House on the Florida Southern Campus at 3 p.m. on March 30. The FSC team will be coached by FSC president, Anne Kerr, and the Lakeland Community team will be led by city commissioner R. Howard Wiggs.

Spectators will be entertained by FSC faculty, staff, students, and City of Lakeland participants. Volunteer athletes include FSC athletic director Lois Webb, FSC business professor Dr. Craig Bythewood, Commissioner Justin Troller, The Ledger’s Rick Brown, Publix Corporate representative Jason Troller, Thrivent Financial’s Kris D. Pahl, and members of the Polk County Sheriff’s Department and Lakeland Fire Departments.

“The students have worked so hard on this event,” said Kerr. “It is truly inspirational seeing students and the community coming together for an important cause.”

All proceeds will be donated to The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. Attendants will be encouraged to take part in raffles and a silent auction of autographed memorabilia, including items from the Orlando Magic, ESPN, Tampa Bay Lightning, Joe Theisman, Gold’s Gym, and True MD.

The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Since 1993, the foundation has raised more than $70 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide. It awards 100 percent of all new direct cash donations and net proceeds of events directly to cancer research and related programs. The Foundation, which has received five consecutive top 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator, awards grants through a competitive awards process strictly supervised by a Scientific Review Committee.
