FSC 4-H Club chapter named National New Club of the Year

LAKELAND, Fla. (Feb. 28, 2008) — Florida Southern’s newly established 4-H Club chapter was named the National New Club of the Year at the National Collegiate 4-H Conference held in Denver Feb. 21-24. FSC was chosen from a pool of 10 chapters across the nation.

FSC freshman Kevin Kersey attended the conference and spoke on “How to Create an Effective Organization at your College or University.” Kersey is majoring in biology-environmental sciences with a minor in secondary education. He is the son of Kelly and Kevin Kersey of St. Cloud, Fla.

“Kevin and the other members of this new 4-H club are amazingly hard workers with a lot of enthusiasm,” said Dr. Curtis Peterson, professor of horticultural science and the club’s advisor, “and they deserve to be recognized.”

Established in the fall 2007 semester, the chapter has worked with Polk County 4-H on the Polk County Youth Fun Day by organizing field games, and participated in the National Service Project, Operation: Military Kids, by writing letters to local service men and women overseas. The club plans to hold many service projects in the coming year.
