FSC faculty pursue academic projects

LAKELAND, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2005) - Florida Southern College faculty pursue extracurricular academic activities year-round, giving presentations, publishing articles, and attending conferences. Following is a summary of their recent activities.

Dr. John Crow
, associate English professor, presented a paper at the meeting of the National Council of Teachers of English on Nov. 20. The paper, "Coherence and Cohesion: The GUESS Exercise," explored an approach to the teaching of writing by looking at it from an information processing perspective. Errors in coherence or cohesion, normally elusive to present in the classroom, are made tangible through the GUESS exercise, which Crow explained and demonstrated.

Dr. Mary Pharr
, English professor, presented a paper, "Ce n'est pas la guerre: Hollywood's Failure to Fathom the Iliad," at the War in Literature and Film Conference in Dallas, Texas, on Nov. 12. The paper reviewed the stylistic and thematic flaws in several lavish films supposedly inspired by Homer. Dr. Pharr also moderated a session on "Aesthetics of War IV" at the conference.

Andrew Pearson
, director of the Roux Library, was elected vice president/president-elect of the Florida Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (FACRL). As a state chapter, FACRL provides opportunities for professional growth and communication among academic and research librarians in Florida.

Dr. Christopher H. Ramey
, assistant psychology professor, has published an article, "Confounds in the distinction between high and low imageability words: phonological, etymological, and morphological differences," in Brain and Language 91.
