Florida Southern College announces 2006 Honor Walk recipient

FSC’s highest honor goes to Erin L. Smith of Lakeland, Fla.

LAKELAND, Fla. (April 25, 2006) — Erin L. Smith, a senior from Lakeland, Fla. who graduated in December, was named the 2006 Florida Southern College Honor Walk Student during Honors Convocation April 19. Each spring, faculty and staff nominate the student they feel deserves the highest honor that FSC awards to a graduating senior.

“Erin Smith was selected as the student who exemplifies student achievement in academics, service to FSC, exemplary character and desire to make a consequential impact on society,” said college president Anne B. Kerr. “The Honor Walk is one of the college’s oldest traditions, and serves as a tribute to our most talented and dedicated students.”

Smith is a biology major and the daughter of Kenneth Smith and Saralyn Smith of Lakeland, Fla. As an active member of the Student Government Association, she served as a freshman senator, vice president of academics and student advocate vice president. She also served as vice president of the commuter student association, a southern ambassador, and a member of the Moccasin cheerleading squad. She contributed over 1,000 volunteer hours serving as a volunteer high school cheerleading coach, a Crystal Lake Elementary School volunteer, and the chairman of the United Way Week of Impact. Smith conducted research at the University of Florida Citrus Research and Education Center during the summers of 2002 and 2003, and in 2005 completed a full year dental internship program. She is a President’s Scholar, the Helen McConville Biology Scholar for 2002-2005, and a member of ODK, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Eta Sigma honoraries. She was selected for Who’s Who Among American Universities and Colleges, and is an active member of her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. Smith has been recognized as Student Leader of the Year, Freshman Leader of the Year, Greek Woman of the Year, and Scholar Athlete for 2003-04 and 2004-05.

The college held a ceremony following the convocation to unveil Smith’s name plate installed in the Honor Walk sidewalk in the Robert E. Christoverson Memorial Garden to the north of Joseph-Reynolds and Allan Spivey residence halls.
