The Sarah D. and L. Kirk McKay, Jr. Archives Center
The McKay Archives Center serves as a place where records, documents, and collections of enduring administrative or historical value for Florida Southern College are preserved. The Center also houses the Ruth K. and Charles T. Thrift, Jr., Florida United Methodist Heritage Center; the Governor Lawton M. Chiles, Jr., Center for Florida History; the Florida Citrus Archives; and the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame. Arrangements to use the Florida Conference of The United Methodist Church materials must be made through the Conference Archivist (863.688.5563). The James A. Haley Collection contains the papers, correspondence and speeches of Congressman James A. Haley, who served as the U. S. Representative for the Seventh Congressional District of Florida (Sarasota-Lakeland area) from 1952 through 1976. A paper index to the collection is located in the archives building with the files. FSC Archives About the Digital Collections FSC History Alma Mater Our Building The groundbreaking for the McKay Archives Center took place during the College's Founders Day Celebration on March 19, 2007, with Librarian of Congress Dr. James H. Billington delivering the Founders Day address and participating in the groundbreaking ceremonies. The building was dedicated on February 20, 2009. Special guests included former first lady of Florida Rhea Chiles, United States Senator Kay Hagan of North Carolina, and FSC's Board of Trustees. The architects are Lakeland-based Straughn Trout Architects, LLC, and a time-lapse view of the construction is available at their site. Other project photographs may be found here and here.
