Beginning with the fall of 2010, all first-time-in-college students in the Day Program are guarÂanteed a travel experience after the completion of their fourth full semester at Florida Southern*. The best part is that a significant portion of the trip costs are covered. Some trips may cost you nothing extra except course credit charges.

Each Junior Journey trip has course-related requirements and students will receive course credit for the trip. Transfer students may opt-in to Junior Journey experiences by paying for the cost of the trip. Trips are offered during Fall Break, Spring Break, May Term and Summer Term.
Approved Trips for 2012
New Mexico - Summer 2012: Libraries, Archives, and Museums of New Mexico - LIB 3998 (1 credit hour). How do cultural institutions in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, and Cimarron, New Mexico preserve and present Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo American history? This Junior Journey course will engage students in a first-hand exploration of libraries, archives, and museum sites in a state that features a unique blend of ancient and modern traditions - The Land of Enchantment.
Washington D.C. - Summer 2012: FSC in DC - POS 1997 (1 credit hour). This course is an exploration of the connections between the people, businesses and political networks of Florida with those of Washington D.C., and represents an effort for Floridians and others to see Florida's political aspects in the national context. Through site visits, selected speakers, and formal and informal meetings with political, business and alumni figures associated with both, students will gain firsthand knowledge of the national contours of state politics.
Caribbean Cruise - Fall Break 2012: Cruising and Taxes in the Caribbean - ACC 3997 (1 credit hour). This course is an exploration of taxation and fees in the Caribbean. Students will visit with a Bahamian Chartered Accountant, visit with a CPA from St. Thomas, and work to understand the concept of port fees paid by cruise lines to local governments.
Paris & Rome - Fall Break 2012: Cracking the DaVinci Code - MAT 1997 (1 credit hour). This course is a hands-on experience of coding and cryptography through a tour of Dan Brown’s DaVinci Code book. We will describe the history of coding theory and cryptography, tour Paris including the Ritz Hotel, Jardin des Tuileries, the Louvre, and St. Germaine-des-Pres. We will apply coding and cryptography techniques, and tour Rome including the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peters Basilica Whisper System, Bernini sculptures in Piazza Navona, and the Papal summer retreat. No previous coding experience necessary.
Pensacola, Florida - Fall Break 2012: The Athlete’s Journey: From Surgery to Recovery - ATP 3997 (1 credit hour). This course will be a one week clinical experience at the Andrews Institute in Pensacola, Florida. Students will interact with a variety of medical personnel that provide care to patients at the Institute. Experiences will include observation in the surgical suite, physical therapy department for post-surgical rehabilitation, performance enhancement for return to play conditioning, cadaver laboratory and research center, radiologic imaging and the outpatient clinic.
London - Fall Break 2012: International Business in London - BUS 3997 (1 credit hour). This travel course will take students to London, England, an international hub for business and culture. Students interested in international business will meet with the staffing and marketing managers of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. They will share with us the difficulties and surprises that arose as a result of various language barriers and culture clashes. Additionally, we will visit the Chamber of Commerce for a briefing on the critical trade issues London currently faces as well as its position within Western Europe’s economy.
Mexico - Fall Break 2012: Mayan Adventure on the Yucatan Peninsula - LAS 1998 (1 credit hour). This course will introduce students to one of the most influential founding mother cultures, the Maya. The Maya have long been thought of by many as a “lost civilization”, and have recently been popularized in the collective mind due to the infamous 2012 Mayan doomsday prophecy, and Mel Gibson’s movie, Apocalypto. Students will learn the history of the Maya and its standing through readings, attending guest lectures, and by visiting different Mayan sites on the Yucatan Peninsula.Students will keep a journal documenting visits to archaeological sites, and the presence and influence of modern Maya on the Peninsula.

France - Fall Break 2012: History of Western Architecture - ARH 3997 (1 credit hour). This Junior Journey course occurs over Fall Break, and is in addition to the Fall semester four hour course. During the travel course, we will trace the history of architecture from Roman times to the present in France, beginning at Nîmes and Orange in the south of France, traveling through Avignon and Lyon to see Medieval buildings, and finishing in Paris with buildings from the Renaissance to today.
