Q:When did the new Roux Library open?

A: In 1968, a “human conveyor belt” of students moved books from the old library (in what is now the Buckner Building) to the new building, north of the Water Dome. The new Roux Library was part of a period of development led by Dr. Charles T. Thrift, who served as president for 19 years. Under President Thrift, the College also built the Jenkins Field House to support its nationally recognized athletics programs; the Ludd M. Spivey Humanities and Fine Arts Center; and the Student Union Building. The capital budget had gotten a huge boost from the 1966 bequest of $7 million from the estate of the late Mrs. T.G. Buckner of Jacksonville. At the time, it was the largest single gift made to higher education in Florida.
