Q: Who was the College's first official president
after it was chartered in 1885?

A: Joshua Hollingsworth was named president of Florida Conference College, then in Leesburg, in 1886. Mr. Hollingsworth grew up in Galway, Fla., near what would become the city of Lakeland. Coincidentally, the College eventually would be sited on Lake Hollingsworth, which is named after Joshua Hollingsworth's uncle, John Henry Hollingsworth, an early settler of Lakeland.
