Florida Humanities Council Audio Recording: "Uncovering Florida's Violent Legacy"

Listen to Professors Randolph Roth (Ohio State University) and James Denham (Florida Southern College) explore some of the motives behind Florida's extraordinary murder rate in the decades before the Civil War: the government's lack of credibility and its inability to enforce the law; the Southern penchant for honor; slavery and race; and the way of life on the open frontier. They also seek connections between the state's bloody past and its present. (March 2010, Florida Lecture Series, Robert & Rose Stahl Criminal Justice Lecture)
