The George W. Jenkins Scholarship is designed to help academically outstanding freshman applicants who demonstrate significant financial need. The scholarship is intended to enable deserving students to undertake a four-year college education without substantial economic hardship for themselves or their families. The scholarship provides for the total cost of full-time tuition, room, meals, fees, books, and supplies for two semesters annually - up to four consecutive years - for each recipient. In addition, a $3,000 annual stipend for personal expenses and laptop computer are awarded. The value of each four-year scholarship is in excess of $125,000. For automatic renewal of the award, students must continue to exhibit academic excellence during the course of their college studies, as demonstrated by a cumulative college grade point average of 3.0. No other obligations (such as work requirements or loans) are incurred by recipients of this scholarship.
To be considered for the George W. Jenkins Scholarship, candidates must have graduated from a high school in Florida and be a Florida resident. Student applicants must submit evidence of exceptional academic achievement in a college preparatory curriculum maintaining a minimum of a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, show active participation in school or community activities, exhibit a strong work ethic, demonstrate substantial financial need as documented by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), be eligible for at least the Medallion level Bright Futures scholarship, and manifest the desire to succeed in their endeavors. Students who have overcome significant economic obstacles while achieving their academic and personal goals will receive special consideration. Finalists will be selected shortly after March 15 and will be invited to meet with the members of the George W. Jenkins Scholarship Committee for an interview. Five new awards are made annually.
