Edwin L. Plowman, Ph. D.
Professor of Sociology

"I use engaged learning in all of my teaching. I attempt to motivate my students to take part in active learning. I attempt to promote active discussion in all my classes and encourage critical thinking about topics that are discussed. For example, I take my students on field trips to homeless shelters in order to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of poverty and to see the reality of applied sociology."

Edwin L. Plowman, Ph. D., is currently Professor of Sociology at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, having served formerly as Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology. He has taught at Flolrida Southern College for 34 years. Previously, Dr. Plowman taught in the Sociology Department of High Point University for five years. He received his
B. A. degree in Sociology from North Carolina State University and his Master's and Ph. D., degrees from Boston University. Dr. Plowman has traveled extensively abroad in England and other European countries with many student groups that he has led. His major research interests include sociology of sport, baseball and American society, race relations, and social problems.

Dr. Plowman enjoys Antique book collecting, traveling, walking, running, and being fully involved in church life.
