Alyssa Foxson, MS
Visiting Instructor of Biology
I have been utterly fascinated by the unseen world around me since my childhood pediatrician showed me my first germ under the microscope at 5 years old. Enthusiasm is contagious and my goal in the classroom is to infect my students with this same love of Biology. I apply the concept of the one-room schoolhouse to my classes. Students in college classes are very diverse and I believe if I develop a collaborative learning environment students will want to learn. I don't want my students to feel as if they are just a face in the crowd. I want them to know that I care about their success and then maybe they will too. We spend lots of time doing group activities and nothing is better than seeing students teach each other!
I am new to FSC and to Florida as of Fall 2013. I am originally from NYC. I was invited to FSC this year to help support teaching the largest incoming freshman class in history! I am currently teaching Bio1500 which is the introductory level Biology course for Biology majors. I am scheduled to teach Cell Biology and Bio1000 in the spring 2014. My background is in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics with an interest in the extremophiles of Earth and Astrobiology. I came back to my love of teaching at FSC from my last position at the Colorado Department of Public Health where I was part of a nationwide team of scientists conducting air surveillance for release of bioweapons for DHS. I fell in love with teaching during my undergraduate years at MSU where I became a TA during my freshman year. The hands-on teaching style required of TA's is where I developed my collaborative approach to teaching. I was continuously told by my students they learned more from their TA's than their instructors in large lecture classes. I have been teaching college since 2005 in several states, including, Michigan and Colorado. I have taught a variety of classes including: General Biology I and lab, Intro and advanced Cell Biology, and General and Applied Microbiology and lab.
Traveling! I have been to over 40 US states including Alaska, Hawaii, and the US Virgin Islands. I have been around Europe and I am planning my next trip to the pyramids of Egypt.
