James Beck, M.F.A.
Associate Professor of Theatre Arts

"My approach to learning is one of sharing ideas and making those ideas inspire curiosity and a need to know more. I attempt to create an environment in which I can share ideas with students, and forge connections between them and the material. I ask students to share in the learning process through relating their own experiences and ideas. For learning to be effective, the student needs to define its relevance to her."

Mr. Beck is the Designer/Technical Director of the Department of Theatre Arts. Jim received his BA in Theatre from Hiram College in 1984 and an MFA in Production Design and Technology from Ohio University in 1986. After completing coursework in the doctoral program in theatre history and criticism at the University of Missouri in 1988, he began designing and directing for various theatre companies as well as teaching at the college level.

Jim served as resident designer for The Misery Loves Company and The Kenley Players, in Cleveland, Ohio where he designed for Tony Randall, Loni Anderson, Barbara Eden, and Judy Kaye, among others, before joining the Faculty of Florida Southern College in 1996. Since coming to Florida he has designed and directed for several central Florida theatres, including Theatre Winter Haven, Lakeland Community Theatre, the Ocala Civic theatre and TheatreWorks Florida, for whom he also serves as vice-president of its board of directors.

In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Jim leads an annual Study Abroad trip to France for students from Florida Southern.
