Finance

Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise & Free Enterprise › Undergrad Studies › Finance

While an accounting degree covers a diverse range
of business functions, choosing to pursue finance will narrow your focus.

Business Administration majors who choose to pursue finance are good with numbers and also understand economics and statistics. They focus on details while keeping an eye on the big picture, which makes them ideal for jobs in commercial banking, financial planning, stock brokerage, and the insurance industry.

What You’ll Study

Your finance curriculum will provide you with the financial management tools needed to succeed in analyzing and executing the financial aspects of managerial decisions.  You'll come to understand money, credit cards, stocks and bonds, and how to navigate financial markets. You’ll take a look at commercial and investment banking. You'll learn how to make predictions and how to determine what fraction of a firm's assets (or your own) to allocate to different investment vehicles to obtain the highest return for a justifiable level of risk. Most importantly, you will gain the global perspective necessary to understand modern finance.

Career Options

Upon graduation, your career can take many paths. Nearly every type of business needs someone with specialized financial knowledge. You can apply your knowledge by choosing to work for any number of corporate enterprises in the areas of corporate finance, financial planning, investment banking, insurance, or real estate. Students who pursue the finance track often choose to open their own businesses, such as consulting firms or financial planning agencies.
