JAMIE MORENO NAMED NEW
CC/TRACK COACH
LAKELAND (June 10, 2008) - Florida
Southern College Athletics Director Lois Webb has announced that
Jamie Moreno, the cross country/track coach at William Woods
University in Fulton, Mo., is the new cross country/track coach at
Florida Southern.
His appointment is effective Aug. 1.
He replaces Rick Moody.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to come to Florida Southern
and build on the success and tradition of the cross country
programs,” Moreno said.
“Every sport at Florida Southern has that same winning
tradition, which shows me that the administration fully supports
athletics and that means a lot to me.”
“I was very impressed with Jamie’s enthusiasm and
professionalism, “ Webb said.
“He presented a solid plan for continuing to build our
cross country and track programs.”
Moreno takes over a
Florida Southern cross country program that has been a power in the
Sunshine State Conference for 12 years.
The men’s team has won 11 consecutive SSC titles and the
women’s team has won six during that 12-year period.
Neither team has finished lower than second in the SSC meet
during that time.
The men’s team has made four straight trips to the Division
II championship, placing 21st last fall.
The women’s team has made three NCAA appearances as a team
and also has had two individual qualifiers.
While FSC’s cross country program is well-established, Moreno also
will be asked to upgrade the status of the track program.
Presently, FSC’s track program consists of the cross
country runners competing in distance events in various meets in the
spring.
The college wants to upgrade the program to a full-fledged
track program.
Moreno has been at William Woods, an NAIA school, since 2004, when
he was hired to begin the cross country/track programs.
In four seasons there, he has produced three women’s
conference championships and one men’s conference championship in
cross country and a total of seven national qualifiers in track.
He earned four conference cross country coach of the year
awards (three with the women, one with the men) and one women’s
region coach of the year award, as well as conference women’s
outdoor track coach of the year this spring.
Before going to William Woods, he was head cross country coach and
assistant track coach at Warrensburg (Mo.) High School for eight
years.
His girls’ cross country teams made five appearances in the
state cross country meet, finishing in the top 10 each year and
winning the state title in 2003.
He was the Class 3A girls’ coach of the year in 2002 and
2003.
His boys’ cross country teams reached the state meet eight
times, finishing in the top 16 each of the eight years.
He was the Class 3A boys’ coach of the year in 2001, when
his team finished second.
Moreno was a four-year cross country/track letterman at the
University of Central Missouri.
He was a member of the 1993 UCM cross country team that
placed fifth at the NCAA Division II Championship.
He also served as a volunteer assistant track coach at UCM
from 2000-04.
He received his bachelor’s degree in business
administration from UCM in 1994, then earned his master’s degree
in educational technology from UCM in 2001.

MOCCASINS
FINISH SECOND IN FIRST MEET OF 2007
DOVER – The
University of Tampa took four of the top five spots to
claim the women’s team title, while Carolyne Kwambai and
Kelsey Dunn helped Florida Southern place second at the
University of Tampa Early Bird Classic.
The first three
runners across the finish line were all Tampa Spartans,
led by Laura Woznicki who set the pace in the 5K race
with a time of 18:10. Jessica Forrester was the only
other runner within a minute of Woznicki.
Kwambai, the Mocs’
top returning women’s runner, was fourth with a time of
19:15 and Dunn was eighth at 19:51 in her first college
race. The Spartans’ fifth runner came in just two
seconds behind Dunn though, clinching the victory for
Tampa.
After that, Florida
Southern was in a battle with Embry-Riddle for second,
and after each school’s top three runners had finished,
the Mocs were ahead only 29-30. However, Ali Gardino
(21:18) and Callie Ramsay (21:29) crossed the line
back-to-back in 22nd and 23rd
place respectively, securing second place for the
Moccasins in their first meet under new head coach Rick
Moody.
The Moccasins
return just three runners from last year’s Sunshine
State Conference championship team that also qualified
for the national championships. Kwambai, Danielle Shimer
(18th place, 20:46), and Gardino were all
among the Florida Southern counters while seven freshmen
filled the other spots on Friday.
Florida Southern’s
next meet is Saturday, September 22, at the Florida
Intercollegiate in Tallahassee.
