ALL-AMERICAN GIRL: CLAMPITT-HOLSENBECK NAMED
DAKTRONICS
DIVISION II FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN
The first NCAA Division II women's
soccer All-American team has been announced and a
familiar face is on the list. Senior defender Amy
Clampitt-Holsenbeck was selected a First Team
All-American in voting conducted by sports information
directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences.
The first Florida Southern women's
soccer player to earn All-American honors,
Clampitt-Holsenbeck was also the first to be named the
Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year.
She earned both honors in her first year as a defender,
moving to center back after playing as both a midfielder
and forward earlier in her college career.
Clampitt-Holsenbeck helped the Mocs limit their
opponents to just 9.6 shots per game, a new school
record, and set another school record with seven
shutouts.
The senior from Winter Springs was
also the team's leading scorer with nine goals and her
20 points were second on the team. Those 20 points were
the most in the country for any defender at the Division
II level, one more than Elaine Zaveckas of Seton Hill
(PA). Five of her nine goals this season were
game-winners.
Florida Southern's 12-7-1 record was
the best in the program's 10-year history, and the
Moccasins narrowly missed their first ever NCAA
postseason bid. They were bumped from the field after an
upset winner claimed the automatic bid from the Gulf
South Conference Tournament.
Among the others named to the
Daktronics All-American Team was midfielder Courtney
Evans of Tampa, a Second Team selection and the only
other player from the SSC. Montevallo midfielder Stacey
Balaam was a First Team selection and West Florida
forward Dernelle Mascall was on the Second Team.
Top-ranked and undefeated Grand
Valley State (MI) dominated the team with four
selections, all on the First Team. The Lakers are
scheduled to play Tampa in the national semi-finals on
Thursday, November 29. Franklin Pierce (NH) and Seattle
Pacific are in the other semi-final game, and they were
represented with a total of five players.
Daktronics, which sponsors the team,
is a world leader in scoring, timing and programmable
display systems for virtually every sport at every level
of competition. Founded in 1968 by two South Dakota
State University professors, Daktronics grew from a
provider of electronic voting systems for state
legislatures to one of the world's largest suppliers of
electronic signs. In 2006, Daktronics installed the
world's largest high-definition screen at Darrell
Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium at the University of Texas,
known as the "Godzillatron".
The NSCAA All-American team will be
announced at a later date. |
