BURGNER QUALIFIES, BUT MOCS FALL SHORT

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS - Heather Burgner will represent Florida Southern at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship, but unfortunately, her teammates won't be competing with her.  Burgner added a final round of 75 Wednesday to her previous rounds of 73 and 76 to finish in second place with a 224 at the NCAA South Regional at Howey-In-The-Hills.  That score, which was just one stroke behind tournament medalist Sandra Changkija of Nova Southeastern, enabled Burgner to qualify as an individual for the Division II Championship May 13-16 in Houston, Texas.

The defending national champion Moccasins did have their best round of the tournament on Wednesday, shooting a 299, but they had too much ground to make up to finish in the top two to advance as a team to the Division II Championship.  Their final round 299 was the second-best round of the entire tournament, topped only by Nova Southeastern's second-round 293.  The Sharks used that second round score to vault into the lead, which they maintained through the final round, winning with a final team score of 902.  Rollins was second with a 909 and the Moccasins were third at 926.  Nova Southeastern and Rollins advance to the Division II Championship.

Jackie Barenborg, playing in her final tournament for FSC, led the team with a 73 on Wednesday.  Lindsey Bergeon, also playing in her final tournament, shot a 75 and the two Moccasin seniors finished in a tie for 16th at 236 to wrap up their four-year careers at Florida Southern.  Marianne Andersson shot a final round of 76 and came in at 237 to tie for 19th.  Kim Ulander had an 81 to finish in a tie for 23rd at 238.

MOCS FALL TO FOURTH AFTER ROUND TWO OF REGIONAL

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS - Nova Southeastern charged into the lead after two rounds of the NCAA Division II South Regional at Mission Inn Resort at Howey-In-The Hills on Tuesday, leaving the defending national champion Moccasins with a huge deficit to try to make up in the final round.  The Sharks are at 601 after making a 15-stroke improvement from Monday's score, shooting a 293 on Tuesday following Monday's 308.  The Moccasins went from a 310 on Monday to a 317 on Tuesday, leaving them in fourth place at 627.  Rollins is second at 607 and Barry is third at 622.

Heather Burgner had the Moccasins' best round for the second straight day, shooting a 76 that has her at 149, tied for third.  After Lindsey Bergeon's 79, FSC had to count two scores in the 80s for the second straight day, as Kim Ulander and Marianne Andersson each shot an 81 and Jackie Barenborg had an 82.

Barry's Johanna Soderstrom took over the individual lead after shooting a second straight 73 that put her at 146, two strokes ahead of first-day leader Sandra Changkija of Nova Southeastern.

The final round of the South Regional will be played Wednesday.  The top two teams will advance to the Division II Championship May 13-16 in Houston, Texas.

MOCS THIRD AFTER ROUND ONE OF REGIONAL

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS - Florida Southern’s women’s golf team found itself in familiar company after the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional at Mission Inn Resort at Howey-In-The Hills on Monday.  In four of their five tournaments this spring, FSC, Nova Southeastern and Rollins have been the top three teams, not necessarily in that order.  After Monday’s opening round in the regional, those same three teams are leading the field.  Rollins is in first place with a team score of 304.  Nova Southeastern is second at 308 and the Moccasins are third at 310, with Barry two behind FSC at 312.  Lynn (320) and West Florida (330) round out the six-team field.

Heather Burgner led the Moccasins with a one-over-par 73 that has her in a four-way tie for second.  Sunshine State Conference champion Sandra Changkija of Nova Southeastern is the individual leader at 72.

FSC’s Kim Ulander had a 76 in the opening round and is in a tie for ninth.

The top three teams each had players with a round of 80 or better, but Rollins had to count just one, Joanna Coe at 80.  The Moccasins had to count an 80 by Marianne Andersson and an 81 by Jackie Barenborg.  Nova Southeastern had to count a pair of 81s by Taylor Collins and Fredrika Hakansson.

Ironically, Nova Southeastern’s Maria Garcia Austt and the Moccasins’ Lindsey Bergeon, who placed second and third, respectively, at last year’s NCAA Division II Championship, each shot an 82 and were the non-counters for their schools in Monday’s opening round.

Round two of the South Regional will be played Tuesday with the final round set for Wednesday.  The top two teams will advance to the Division II Championship May 13-16 in Houston, Texas.

DEFENDING CHAMPS READY TO DEFEND

The defending national champion Moccasins are set to defend last year's title and bid for a repeat national championship.  The Moccasins are one of six teams selected for the South Regional that will be played May 5-7 at the Mission Inn Resort & Club at Howey-In-The-Hills.

Joining the Moccasins in the tournament are Sunshine State Conference foes Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Barry and Lynn, plus West Florida.  The top two teams from each of the four regional tournaments will qualify for the NCAA Division II Championship May 13-16 in Houston, Texas.
