LOVESTRAND
AND WILLIAMS
MAKE ALL-SOUTH REGION TEAM
The postseason awards
continued for Florida Southern on Thursday as
both Sara Lovestrand
and Angela Williams were named to the
All-South Region Team selected by the National
Fastpitch Coaches' Association. Lovestrand was a
First Team honoree and Williams was on the
Second Team. Both players earned the award a day
after being voted First Team All-Sunshine State
Conference.
Lovestrand came to Florida Southern
this year as a junior after helping Chipola Junior
College win the NJCAA Division I national championship
in 2007. Playing both second base and shortstop for the
Moccasins, she led the team with a .384 batting average
and 20 extra base hits. Lovestrand had 12 doubles, four
triples, four home runs, 20 RBI, and was not caught in
12 stolen base attempts.
Now a three-time First Team All-SSC
selection, Williams made the All-South Region Team for
the first time in her career. Like Lovestrand, she
finished among the top ten in the SSC with her .376
batting average and also led the team with 17 walks and
a .460 on-base percentage. The junior designated player
from Lakeland also hit five doubles, two triples, and
two home runs, while driving in a team-high 25 runs and
stealing 12 bases. |

Five members of the Florida Southern
softball team were voted All-Sunshine State Conference,
including one who made the league all-star team for the
third time and one freshman. Angela Williams and
Sara Lovestrand were each named First Team All-SSC,
while Brittany Minton, Natalie Lang and
Lindsey Powell were on the Second Team.
League-champion Barry led the way
with eight selections, and the team was dominated by
underclassmen. Of the 27 players selected either First
or Second Team All-SSC (there was a tie at one
position), only four were seniors. A total of 18 juniors
were on the team, including four of Florida Southern's
five selections. Powell was the only freshman among the
group and was one of four freshmen in the SSC to make
the team.
Three of the all-conference Moccasins
played together at Lakeland's George Jenkins High
School, a group comprised of Williams, Lang and Powell.
Lovestrand and Minton were also teammates before
arriving at Florida Southern, as the two helped lead
Chipola Junior College to a national championship in
2007.
Williams is First Team All-SSC as a
designated player for the third year in a row, the first
player in league history to achieve that. She hit .376
with two home runs, a team-high 25 RBI and 12 steals.
Her batting average placed her in the top 10 in the SSC,
and her team-leading 17 walks also put her among the
league leaders in on-base percentage. Since making the
All-SSC Team as a freshman, Williams' average has
climbed each of the last two years and she'll enter her
senior year with 90 career RBI and 52 steals.
Lovestrand led Florida Southern with
a .384 batting average, as well as slugging percentage
on the strength of a team-leading 20 extra base hits.
After spending a little more than half the season at
second base, Lovestrand moved to shortstop in late March
and committed just one error in 19 games at that
position. As the Moccasins' leadoff hitter in every
game, she was second on the team with 12 doubles, first
with four triples and tied for first with four home
runs. She also had 20 RBI and was 12-for-12 on stolen
bases.
Her former junior college teammate
was All-SSC as well, with Minton making the Second Team.
Putting together an 18-9 record, Minton was second in
the league with a 0.86 ERA as opposing batters hit just
.165 against her. Her ERA also ranked fourth in Division
II, and Minton beat two of the pitchers ahead of her.
She gave up either no runs or one run in 18 of her 30
starts, and more than one earned run only four times.
She struck out 163 and walked 33 in 179.1 innings.
Lang's selection to the
all-conference team is her second such award; she was
honorable mention in 2006. The junior outfielder hit
.331 overall but was even better in conference play with
a .362 average. She also hit .438 with runners in
scoring position, had six doubles, one home run and 22
RBI. Lang also was a stand-out in the field, leading all
SSC outfielders by handling 81 chances without an error.
In her three-year career, Lang has taken away several
hits and committed just two errors.
Powell turned into one of the
league's top freshmen by the end of the season, starting
all but one game for the Mocs, most of them in the
outfield. She hit .314 overall, .323 in conference play,
and .368 the second half of the schedule. She finished
second on the team with 23 RBI, hit four doubles and one
home run, and was also second on the team with 11
sacrifice bunts. Twice during her freshman year, Powell
had a game-tying hit with two out in the seventh inning.
Winning the league's top individual
awards were Saint Leo's Ashley Urbanik (SSC
Player-of-the-Year), Barry's Amber Jack (SSC
Pitcher-of-the-Year), Rollins' Christine Roser (SSC
Freshman-of-the-Year), and Barry's Danielle Penner (SSC
Coach-of-the-Year). |
