EIGHT SCHOOL
RECORDS FALL IN MOCS' SEASON FINALE
ORLANDO (2/17) - Eight school records,
three each by Craig
Hilgenberg and Kaitlyn Smith, highlighted the Moccasins'
season-ending performance at the Sunshine State
Invitational at Orlando over the weekend.
Hilgenberg broke his own school record
with a win the 50-yard
freestyle Friday. His time of 21.51 seconds broke his previous mark of
21.92 that he set last year in this meet while swimming
on the 200-yard freestyle relay team. Saturday he
won the 100-yard breaststroke in a school-record time of
58.38 seconds, breaking the mark of 59.14 he set in the
2006 Sunshine State Invitational. Sunday he placed
second in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.04 seconds,
topping the previous mark of 47.73 he had set in last
year's Sunshine State meet. All three of his
record times were provisional NCAA qualifying times.
Smith had a third-place finish
in the 500-yard freestyle Friday with a school-record
time of 5:17.82. That bettered the previous school
mark of 5:23.60 set by Casey Renner in 2006.
Saturday Smith won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:55.97,
breaking the previous school record of 11:07.96 that she
had set earlier this season. Sunday she was second
in the 1650-yard freestyle in a school-record time of
18:32.03, surpassing the mark of 19:08.04 she had set
earlier this season.
In addition to the school records set by
Hilgenberg and Smith, Kelsey Duncan broke her own school
record in the 200-yard butterfly Sunday with a time of
2:14.95. That broke the record of 2:16.48 she had
set earlier this season. The final school record
that was set went to the men's 800-yard freestyle relay team
of John Marotte, Aaron Ostroff, Seamus Burke and
Hilgenberg. They turned in a time of 7:35.38,
breaking the mark of 7:44.65 set last season.
In the final team scores, the Moccasins
were fourth in both meets. Tampa won the men's
meet with 1,055 points, followed by Rollins with 740,
Saint Leo with 629 and FSC with 289. Tampa won the
women's meet with 912 points, followed by Rollins with
707, Saint Leo with 598 and FSC with 370.
SMITH &
HILGENBERG POST DOUBLE WINS IN FINAL DUAL
WINTER PARK (2/2) - Kaitlyn Smith and
Craig Hilgenberg each had a pair of wins for the

138-48. The Moccasin women finished 3-5 in dual
meets this season, while the men were 0-8.
Smith won the 200-yard individual medley
and took the 500-yard freestyle, while Hilgenberg won
the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.
In the women's meet, FSC also had wins from Caroline
Kennon in the 100-yard butterfly and Kara Schulkers in
the 100-yard backstroke.
The Moccasins finish their season at the
Sunshine State Invitational Feb. 15-17 at Orlando.
TRIPLE WINS FOR
KENNON & BURKE, MOCS SPLIT FINAL HOME DUAL WITH FAMU
LAKELAND (1/19) - Caroline Kennon and
Seamus Burke each won three events as Florida Southern
split its final home swimming meet of the season
Saturday against Florida A&M. Kennon won the
100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard
butterfly to lead the FSC women to a 121-32 victory. For
the second time this season, the women won every event
in their meet. They posted a similar sweep in a win over
Rollins Nov. 10. Burke posted wins in the 1650-yard
freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle,
but the FSC men lost 105-72.
In addition to Kennon's three wins, the
Moccasin women received double wins from Kristin Caputo
in the 200-yard and 50-yard freestyle, Kara Schulkers in
the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, Kaitlyn Smith in
the 1650-yard and 500-yard freestyle, and Kelsey Duncan
in the 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual
medley. Smith's time of 19:08.04 in the 1650
freestyle gave her a second school record this season.
Her time topped the previous mark of 19:31.66 set by
Courtney Jackson last season. Earlier this season
Smith set the school record in the 1000-yard freestyle
(11:07.96).
The FSC men had a pair of double winners
to go with Burke's three victories. Craig Hilgenberg won
the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and John Marotte
took the 200-yard and 50-yard freestyle. Saturday's meet
marked the final home appearance for seniors Caputo and
Hilgenberg. Each swam the anchor leg for their
respective team in the meet's final event, the 200-yard
freestyle relay.
The Moccasins' final dual meet of the
season is Feb. 2 at Rollins.
