JOYCE, TOMKO BACK IN THE BIGS

Former Mocs Brett Tomko and Matt Joyce are back in the Major Leagues as Tomko has signed with San Diego and Joyce was called back to Detroit to take Magglio Ordonez's place on the roster who was placed on the disabled list.

For Tomko, this marks his second stint with the Padres having finished the 2007 season with the club. The 11-year major league veteran had signed with Kansas City for the 2008 season but was designated for assignment on June 12 and then released outright on June. The 1995 NCAA Division II Player of the Year began his career in 1997 with the Cincinnati Reds and takes a 95-99 career record into San Diego.

For Joyce, this is is second appearance with the big club. A member of the Mocs' 2005 NCAA National Championship team, Joyce was first called to the majors on March 12 and played in 18 games with five homers and 10 RBI before being sent back to AAA Toledo.

THREE MOCS CHOSEN IN MLB DRAFT

Three Moccasins were selected on the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft. Pitcher Jeremy Thorne was picked by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 29th round. Outfielder Brian Schultz was a 35th round selection by the Florida Marlins. Pitcher Ryan Koch was picked in the 36th round by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Thorne led the Moccasin pitching staff in appearances with 24 this season and also led the team in saves with seven. Schultz hit .311 and was second on the team in home runs (11) and third in RBI (44). Koch was 3-1 with a 2.84 earned run average in 19 appearances, all in relief.

TILLMAN NAMED TO ALL-REGION TEAM

Freshman righthander Daniel Tillman is the Moccasins’ representative on the NCAA Division II All-South Region Team selected by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Tillman, who became the Moccasins’ closer towards the end of the season, received second-team recognition as a relief pitcher. In 20 appearances, 19 in relief, he was 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA, five saves and 29 strikeouts in 25 innings. In Sunshine State Conference games, he was 2-0 with four saves and a 1.12 ERA. Tillman had been a second-team All-SSC selection earlier.

FOUR MOCS NAMED TO ALL-SSC TEAM

Florida Southern had four players named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Baseball Team announced Wednesday. David Golliner was a first-team selection at the utility position and Arden McWilliams (3B), Robbie Shields (SS) and Daniel Tillman (RP) were second-team selections. Golliner, who split time between catcher and first base, led the Moccasins in home runs (12) and RBI (51) and hit .351. McWilliams started all 50 games this season and hit .338 with nine home runs and 45 RBI. Shields also started all 50 games, hitting .348 with nine home runs and 36 RBI. Tillman was 3-1 with five saves and a 1.80 ERA, striking out 29 in 25 innings. Golliner and McWilliams were seniors this season, Shields was a sophomore and Tillman was a freshman.

Nova Southeastern’s Bryan Cook was named Player of the Year. Barry’s Bobby Hernandez was Pitcher of the Year. Florida Tech’s Matt Schurig was Freshman of the Year. Tampa’s Joe Urso was Coach of the Year. Voting for the team was done by the SSC’s head baseball coaches and sports information directors.
