Student Awards and Recognitions
Florida Southern College students continue to do outstanding work that brings them recognition both on and off the campus. What follows is only a partial list of student successes: Amanda Michelle Curry was named the 2003 Honor Walk Student. Lacy Emmerling was selected by the Knight-Ridder newspaper group for a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund (DJNF) editing internship at the Tallahassee Democrat. Ryan Dunne, a Florida Southern College 2003 biology graduate, received the President’s Scholarship Medal during spring commencement April 26, 2003. Heidi Kay Peterson was chosen Leader of the Year by Omicron Delta Kappa’s Province VIII. Peterson, who was the student director of Province VIII, will be among the 16 province nominees to compete for the ODK National Leader of the Year Award. Cathalain Marie Tobin, has been chosen as one of 20 honorees in the 2003 Florida College Student of the Year Award. Alex Okounev and Michelle Ishihara gave a presentation at the regional Mathematics Association of American entitled "On-Line Math Tutor Lab." Katie Meckley and Elisa Bubley presented their research at the Georgia Undergraduate Research Conference in Psychology in April 2003. Seniors Melissa Slavicz, Elizabeth Peloso, and Laura Tomashek and 2002 graduate Karli Taylor presented papers at the meeting of the Florida College English Association. Amanda Wagner and Carmella Frederick presented papers at the Florida State Horticultural Society annual meeting. The society gives awards for best student papers, and Wagner's paper placed second. Both papers will be published in the society's journal. Laura Tomashek and Elizabeth Peloso had essays published by The Oswald Review. Courtney Connell received a $2,000 scholarship from the Cecil Burnett/Betty White Advanced Education Scholarship sponsored by the Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa, Fla. Rebecca S. Parsons received a $2,500 scholarship from the United Parcel Service Scholarship Program Barbara J. Gilbert received a $3,000 scholarship from the Harcourt Scholarship Program. Susan L. Cain received a $3,000 scholarship from the Florida Bankers Educational Foundation. Pamela Allard received a $3,000 scholarship from the LeRoy Collins Memorial Scholarship Program. Jessica Hall was awarded a $5,000 Coca Cola First Generation Scholarship. Nelson A. Schilling received a $3,000 scholarship from TheInsuranceAdvisor.com Scholarship Program. Ten Florida Southern students received $5,000 scholarships from The Opportunity Scholarship Fund: Derrien Bonney, Kimberly Cann, Adele Douglin, TeShandra Haskett, Latoya McCormick, Joanne Mitchell, David Sihombing, Alisha Slater, April Thompson, and Yunior Torres. Melissa Slavicz, Danielle Whaley, and Lisa Reynolds (class of 2001) also presented papers to the Popular Culture Association of the South meeting. April Elston, a 2001 graduate, received an award from the American Chemical Society to attend the 222nd ACS Meeting and present a poster on the work she conducted last year as part of her internship with the University of Florida Agricultural Extension Center in Lake Alfred. Amy Rowley, another 2001 graduate, received a scholarship from the University of Georgia to pursue a Ph.D in Food Chemistry.
