The National Chapter of Psi Chi was founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Membership is open to undergraduate students* that meet the following criteria:
1.) Enrollment as a major or minor in Psychology
2.) Completion of 3 semesters or 5 quarters of the college course
3.) Completion of 9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology courses
4.) Ranking in the top 35% of one’s class in general scholarship
5.) A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in both
psychology classes and in cumulative
grades.
* Graduate students are also eligible for membership if they have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all graduate courses.
The Florida Southern College Chapter of Psi Chi received its charter on May 22,1962. Since then, Psi Chi has been making an impact at the College as well as in the surrounding community. Psi Chi members are dedicated to improving their professional development in the field of psychology. In recent years, our organization has been involved in the mentorship of entering undergraduates as well as acting as a local support system for upper level students. This support system has provided workshops in preparation for the Graduate Records Examinations (GRE) and an array of guest speakers that have ranged from research talks from professors at other colleges and universities, to workers in psychology-related organizations (like the Peace River Center), and to individual speakers that have personal experience with psychology-related disorders like autism. Our members have also presented research at the national level during events such as the Southeastern Psychological Association Annual Meeting. Together, these experiences in active learning have given our members exposure to the world of psychology that can only be seen out of the classroom.
As well as improving our professional development, our organization also takes pride in helping the community. There have been numerous service projects over the years, which include contributions to organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Paint Your Heart Out, and the American Red Cross. We have raised money for local institutions, as well, that help at-risk children like the Foundation School of Lakeland and the PACE Center for Girls. Psi Chi members are encouraged to volunteer and intern at private organizations because such experiences can provide opportunity to give back to the community and receive gratifying life lessons that can only be found in the true spirit of caring.
Fun and games are also an intricate part of any successful club and Psi Chi certainly has its share of laughs. We have enjoyed club picnics with good food and rousing team sports. Monthly “Movie Nights” have also been a particular favorite among club members. These informal gatherings have not only given our members the time to view and discuss interesting psychological movies like “Memento,” and “Pi,” but it has given us the opportunity to get an inside look at Dr. Smith’s house while enjoying pizza (as if he doesn’t see enough of us as it is). We also have the privilege of making our advisors and other psychology department heads do crazy things like swim 100 laps in the pool in February, cut off their hair for Locks of Love, and get pied in the face for charity. And at the end of each year, we hold an Annual Banquet, where we celebrate the inductions of new members, say fond farewells to stalwarts of the organization, and award the achievements over the past year.
Psi Chi has been a special part of college for all of our members and if you have any further questions about this fine organization, please feel free to contact Dr. Patrick L. Smith by phone (863) 680-4477) or by email (psmith@flsouthern.edu).
