Description of the Florida Southern College
Student/Faculty Collaborative Research and Creative Activities
Program
Each year a number of outstanding students are named to the Student/Faculty Collaborative Research and Creative Activities Program at the college. Working closely with faculty mentors, students pursue scholarly and creative activities, whether in the arts, humanities, social, behavioral or natural sciences. Selected in a competitive process, students and their faculty mentors frame projects that will be researched over a ten- to twelve-week period each summer. Students commit to the quality of work that will be publishable. They also commit to sharing their findings at the campus conference Fiat Lux and at regional and national meetings during the year following the mentorship experience. These student/faculty collaborations create unique research opportunities for directed study and for building close working relationships. Students have access to the latest technology and excellent laboratory facilities on campus as well as access to off-campus research centers, laboratories, databases, and scholarship. The Student/Faculty Collaborative Research and Creative Activities Program began in 2001 when Florida Southern College received a generous grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Religious, Charitable, and Educational Fund to create a summer student/faculty research experience. The proposal requested funding for a program that would assist students to "create linkages between theory and application, extend investigative and interpretive skills, increase skill at communicating complex ideas, provide competitive portfolios for graduate school, and foster empathetic learning relationships with faculty." Over the years, the program has received funding from the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland, the John Leighty Family Fund, the Glenn W. & Hazelle Paxson Morrison Foundation, the Heritage Rose Foundation, SunTrust, the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, the Reuschling Scholars Endowment, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Advancement, and friends and alumni of Florida Southern College.
