Physical Education Program
Program Information

What we emphasize:

Our focus is you! Both the Physical Education Teacher Certification major and the Human Movement and Performance major are intentionally designed to be student-centered. We provide many learning opportunities and activities that will help direct and mentor you as you move through your program of study. We want you to be responsible for your education; we will facilitate your learning with diverse, active and engaged sessions that promote your understanding and experience with all of our courses.

How we teach:

Our faculty-student ratio averages 1:15. This intimate class size permits personal attention to your learning goals as well as highlights the depth of faculty expertise. We are proud of the hands-on, interactive environment that we foster in our classroom, lab, and clinical settings. All of our classrooms are equipped with the latest teaching technology to enhance your learning. Active learning is a trademark of our program. Courses allow you to apply classroom topics in real-world scenarios through various labs, clinical experiences, research projects, collaborations with other students and community service projects.

What you will learn:

Physical Education Teacher Certification majors

You will learn how to become a quality teacher by developing a comprehensive understanding of the foundations of education and human movement and its application to teaching in physical education. Spending a great deal of time actually teaching, by way of peer teaching and clinical teaching at various public schools culminating in a semester long teaching assignment (Internship) within selected schools in Polk County will prove to enhance your experience within our program. Also, you will become active within the field of Physical Education by attending State and National professional conferences during your tenure at Florida Southern College. This will keep you abreast of new innovations and pressing issues within the field of Physical Education. Upon completion of the program you will be a licensed Physical Education Teacher for the State of Florida!

Human Movement and Performance majors

You will learn the inner workings of the human body and how it really moves. A solid, scientific, research-based foundation will give you a keen understanding of what impacts human movement and performance and how we can control factors in order to achieve desired results. The ultimate questions we constantly strive to answer are “How do we go from good to great?” and “How do we enhance what we are currently doing?” Also, during your senior year, our program prepares you to sit for the National Strength and Conditioning Associations’ Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam. Upon passing this exam and successfully completing your coursework, you will graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Movement and Performance as well as hold the CSCS credential!
