Band Camp

June 21-27, 2009

This camp is open to students entering grades 8 -12 in the Fall 2009 school year, with at least one year of playing experience, and with their director's signature. Students will be placed in a band based on their audition. Enrollment for the camp is limited due to new residence hall construction, and, as always, waiting lists will develop. New! - Incoming 7th graders will be placed on a waiting list pending dorm space, or can be a "Day Camper." Register early! Deadline is June 1, 2009.

FACILITIES:

Campers living on campus will enjoy spacious, air-conditioned rooms in the residence halls, under excellent adult supervision. Resident campers will be served three meals a day in the cafeteria. All students living outside the Lakeland area are expected to be “Resident Campers” and reside in the residence halls. Resident Campers will not be allowed to leave campus except for an emergency.

“Day Campers” are required to be at all rehearsals, concerts, and performances. Also, they may participate in all evening camp activities. Day campers will be provided lunch, which is included in the camp tuition.

If medical treatment is necessary, it will be provided at the nearest emergency facility. Parents will be billed for such service.

Welcome to another exciting year of Summer Band Camp at Florida Southern College. Our faculty, counselors and facilities are outstanding, creating a safe and caring musical environment. The exceptional faculty and staff are from Florida Southern College or are elite conductors and artist-teachers. Students work directly with the faculty and staff to receive specific instruction. Each student will rehearse and perform in one of three concert bands. Instruction will include large and small ensemble rehearsals, concerts, and electives such as music theory, world drumming, guitar, steel drums, conducting, instrument care/repair and preparation for “All-State” in a master class setting.

AUDITIONS - Students should be prepared to play scales (preferably two octaves) from memory and a piece that is representative of the work they have accomplished, preferably music on the Solo & Ensemble list of the Florida Bandmaster's Association. Percussionists, be prepared to audition on snare, mallets, and timpani. Bring your own mallets and sticks!

The fees include housing for resident campers, meals as listed, facilities, T-shirt, and group instruction. To enroll complete the registration form and return with a required, non-refundable $75.00 deposit (which applies toward the camp tuition) by the deadline. (JUNE 1, 2009)

NEW! The balance of the fees are due June 11, 2009: Money orders must be made PAYABLE TO: Florida Southern College Band Camp, 111 Lake  Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland, FL 33801-5698 or cash will be received at registration. No other form of payment is accepted at this time.

After registering, campers will be sent an information packet that describes all materials and supplies needed for camp. An informal placement audition will be held the day of registration to place students in the accurate band. Students should come prepared to perform scales, one piece of music of their own choice and be prepared to sight-read a short selection.
