Horticultural Science
Program Information

FSC's Horticultural Science program offers majors in Landscape Horticulture, Recreational Turfgrass Management, and Citrus. These programs are unique in several ways. First, we are a strong horticultural program located in a small private college. Second, our turf program is unique in that it combines production of turf with the business management of the many businesses associated with turf such as athletic complexes, golf courses. etc. Third, our citrus program is the only four-year bachelor's degree program in the United States.

A student can study these exciting subjects and still have the benefits of such an institution -- small classes, personal attention, hands-on experience, academic advising by departmental faculty members, and a broad educational background. Often, a student's academic program can be tailored to his or her unique individuals needs. FSC also has the great advantage of being located in the "heart" of Florida's horticultural industries, allowing us the opportunity to visit commercial growers, packers, processors, golf courses, professional sports fields, and the marketers of the crops, in our class field trips.

Because of these advantages, we have always had, and continue to have, an extraordinarily good job placement rate for our graduates. Our alumni are highly successful leaders in Florida agriculture, as well as in other areas of the world.

Within the three fields of study, Landscape Horticulture, Recreational Turfgrass Management, and Citrus , students can choose to emphasize either the business or marketing aspects of the crop, by taking supplemental courses in Business, Marketing, and/or Economics, to prepare them  for any aspect of the horticultural industry. Our Recreational Turfgrass Management majors are capable of managing the entire complex of a golf course, professional or semi-professional athletic field complex, condominium complex, parks and recreation facility, etc.

Most of our classes include a lab, allowing hands-on experience to back up the knowledge gained in lecture sessions. As part of those lab experiences, the students take many field trips to visit producers, packers, and sellers, to see how the "real world" conducts business. Students complete one or more professional internships as part of their curriculum, in which they get excellent on-the-job training and experience.

Scholarship Programs

In addition to scholarships and financial aid offered by the college, there are many Horticultural Science-specific scholarships sponsored by alumni and friends, which make the cost of the program more affordable.
