Honors
Program of Study

Our program is structured around the academic conversation that is inherent in true scholarship. The courses you take will help you enter that conversation, understand its dynamics, and then make your own contribution to it.

In order to earn FSC's College Honors, you must take at least six semesters of Honors courses following this plan:

  Fall Spring
First year HON 115: Joining the Conversation HON 216: Colloquium
Second and third years During these years, students will take at least two seminars
Fourth year Either "Honors within the Major" or Honors Thesis
Also, some time during their residency at FSC Honors Program students must make a public presentation (for example, at the annual Fiat Lux or at the meeting of the FCHC).

See the links to the left for information about the first-year courses, the seminars, and the Honors thesis.

The flexibility of the middle years allows students to miss two terms when the other demands of academic life simply necessitate doing so (or if they plan to graduate in fewer than eight semesters). As well, transfer students can begin in their sophomore year and, by taking four seminars, still complete six semesters of Honors work. Additionally, FSC students who do not start in the Honors Program but who wish to join it (or simply wish to take an HON course) can still complete the six semesters of course work; such students become eligible for the program once they can show a cumulative GPA of 3.5 based on at least two terms of study at FSC. See the Director of the Honors Program (the Associate Dean) for more information.

Other particulars of the Honors Program:

To remain in the program, Honors Program students must also maintain these standards:

  • Absolute academic integrity: any instance of academic dishonesty (for example, cheating or plagiarizing) is grounds for dismissal from the program.
  • High GPA: By the beginning of the junior year, Honors students must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and must maintain that average through graduation.
