ENG206 (S03): ESKIN
About a Boy
I have created this site to help students in my ENG206: English Literature, Spring 2003 class. The links are designed to act as tools for better understanding the language (slang) and cultural references in Nick Hornby's 1998 About A Boy. They are listed in no particular order, though there are a few discernible categories. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me.
Set up like a dictionary, you can search for particular words that might be unfamiliar.
Also set up in a dictionary form, this site is perhaps more inclusive and lists those terms most likely to mystify Americans.
VERY comprehensive, it includes links to sites with various degrees of specificity. Good for Irish slang as well.

(not a live link!)
The kids' show that is mentioned in chapter four.
The homepage for the television program shared by Will and Marcus.
The official website, through the BBC, of the soap opera: East Enders.

Take a virtual tour of London and look through the areas where Will and Marcus live and play.
Frommer's Guide to London neighborhoods
Gives a nice introduction to the various neighborhoods in London, including those discussed in the book.

Everything you need to know about London's subway system, called "the tube" by locals. (Even includes current weather conditions in London.)
The trendy, costly store where Will purchases his home furnishings.
A site written by the author's publisher that gives lists of his publications and part of his biography.
The film's official website. Watch out, it plays music.
Julie Christie:

Academy Awards in 1967.

Academy Awards in 1997? (I'm not sure at this point, sorry)
