Message from the Dean:

Dr. Tracey TedderIt is my pleasure to welcome you to the School of Education at Florida Southern College.  As the oldest private college in the State of Florida, we are a School dedicated to the education of the best teachers aspiring to make a difference in the lives of others.  This commitment is evident through our long and distinguished history of preparing students who are interested in leading and serving in today’s classrooms.  Our multitude of programs including undergraduate, evening degree, graduate, and lab school represent research driven practices in all the fields we teach, state of the art technology, strong content requirements, and engaging learning experiences in a variety of diverse settings.  Additionally, Florida Southern is honored to be home to the Roberts Academy and Roberts Center for Learning and Literacy.

The day and evening undergraduate programs work to meet all students’ needs.  We offer traditional day programs for students interested in majoring in any of the following education majors:

  • Elementary Education, K-6;
  • Secondary Education: Art, K-12;
  • Biology, 6-12;
  • English, 6-12;
  • History, 6-12;
  • Mathematics, 6-12;
  • Music Education, K-12;
  • Spanish, K-12;
  • Physical Education, K-12.

The evening program offers students the opportunity to obtain a baccalaureate degree in elementary education, K-6.  All of the programs offered in the School of Education are State of Florida approved through the Florida Department of Education.

Additionally, we offer two comprehensive graduate degrees:  Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Arts in Collaborative Teaching and Learning.  The Master of Arts in Teaching degree is intended for individuals who have obtained baccalaureate degrees in content areas (e.g., English, mathematics, music, physical education, science, social sciences, foreign languages) without teacher certification.

The Master of Education in Collaborative Teaching and Learning is designed to further the knowledge and accomplished practice of classroom teachers who hold a Professional Teaching Certificate.

The Lab School is a one of a kind, unique learning experience for students in preschool ages 3-5 and kindergarten.  Each day, students are surrounded in a warm, loving environment for learning.  We work side by side with expert educators in the classroom and researchers in the School of Education to provide the most current and relevant brain stimulating, hands-on activities.  Our formula for success includes parents, students, educators, and community working collaboratively to create the maximum learning experiences at every level.

Finally, the Roberts Center for Learning and Literacy was established in 2006 by Hal and Marjorie Roberts to provide specialized instruction and seminars in the early diagnosis and intervention for children with dyslexia and other learning and literacy challenges.  The annual lecture series enables our Florida Southern students to be exposed to internationally renowned scholars and provides professional development opportunities for local teachers to focus on the latest research based teaching techniques in reading instruction.

As the Dean of Education, I would like to invite you to learn more about our programs and explore our website.  Please contact us with any questions.

Sincerely,

Tracey D. Tedder, Ed.D.
