Educational Programs

Approved teacher education programs (majors and minors) at Florida Southern College include:

Teacher Certification: Graduates from Florida Southern College who successfully complete our state-approved teacher education programs and have earned a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree are eligible to apply for a professional teaching certificate in the State of Florida. Requirements in Florida include passing scores on the Florida Teacher Certification Exam, (FTCE) including:

General Knowledge Test;
The Professional Education Test; and
Subject Area Test.

Graduates are also able to apply for teacher certification in states recognizing this accreditation. Many states have a reciprocity agreement with the State of Florida for teacher certification. Students intending to teach in other states are encouraged to check certification requirements in those states early in their programs.

Additional Certification:  Add-on certification is available to teach Exceptional Students, K-12. Middle Grades add-on certification in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies are also available. Alternative career paths are also possible.

Admission to Teacher Education: Students admitted to Florida Southern College who intend to complete a course of study in teacher education are required to apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program.

Transfer students, above the sophomore level, must meet admission requirements to teacher education before enrollment in upper division education classes. Application forms are available in the School of Education office.

Student Teaching: Student teaching is done during the last semester before graduation, and is offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters.

Each student teaching candidate must submit an application to the School of Education by the due dates of each semester prior to the student teaching semester.
