Biology ProgramsAs Aristotle once said, "In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous." By exploring the elemental building blocks of living things—structure, function, growth, origin and evolution—biologists search to unlock the great mysteries of life. Through your own experimentation and observation, you too will learn to classify and describe organisms and their functions, learn how species come into existence and how their interactions impact one another and their environment. Whether you choose to earn your degree in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or Environmental Studies, or to pursue a minor in biology, your small classes (the average is 10-15 students) will be taught by faculty, not by graduate students, all of whom hold a Ph.D. and bring a combined total of over 100 years of teaching experience to the classroom. Teaching through dialogue rather than monologue, faculty emphasize questioning and analysis. Balancing classroom discussion with laboratory and field research, they ensure you obtain the hands-on experience necessary to gain a competitive advantage as you prepare to continue your studies in graduate school or begin your career. As mentors in and out of the classroom, your teachers are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals. In addition to building a foundation in the natural sciences, you will apply your knowledge through experiential learning opportunities such as: research, internships, field studies, and participation in Biology affiliated organizations. Boasting a nearly 100 percent placement rate for those pursuing medical, dental, veterinary, and other advanced studies, Florida Southern students also get highly desirable jobs in cutting-edge research areas such as biotechnology and environmental science.
