Undergraduate Research and Internships

Are you a student who is interested in undergraduate research experience or internships in mathematics or computer science?

FSC mathematics and computer science students with strong academic credentials can participate in undergraduate research projects mentored by a faculty member. Juniors and seniors are also encouraged to apply for outside internships to gain experience in their field prior to graduation.

FSC undergraduate research opportunities are available through the Florida Southern Summer Research Mentorship Program, FSC honors courses and honors thesis, and senior seminar courses.

Students who participate in research projects often present their results at the Fiat Lux Symposium at FSC, and at local and regional professional meetings. In addition, students and faculty may jointly author papers for publication in professional journals.

Some of the recent topics for undergraduate research projects directed by the FSC mathematics and computer science faculty include:

  • "Union spaces and generalized closed sets." Student: Adam Trewyn. Faculty mentor: David Rose.
  • "Using only bumper sensors to map and navigate an environment." Student: Alan George. Faculty mentor: Gwen Walton.
  • "Collectionwise weak continuity duals." Student: Megan Beddow. Faculty mentor: David Rose.
  • "Robot explorations to enhance the undergraduate curriculum." Students: Alan George, Ian Johnson, and Laura Quintana. Faculty mentors: Ken Henderson and Gwen Walton.
  • "Classes of irresolvable spaces." Students: Kari Sizemore and Ben Thurston. Faculty mentor: David Rose
  • " Classifying code artifacts using compression-based distance measures and phylogenetic trees" Students: Christina Parks, Kassie Staats, and Kristin Alfero. Faculty mentor: Gwen Walton.
  • "Vertically rigid functions" Students: Brandi Cain and John Clark. Faculty mentor: David Rose.

Some of the recently published journal papers jointly authored by FSC students and faculty include:

  • David Rose and Ben Thurston, Maximally resolvable lower density spaces, Real Analysis Exchange, 33 (2007/2008), 1-7.
  • David Rose, Kari Sizemore, and Ben Thurston, Strongly irresolvable spaces, International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 2006, Article ID 53653, Pages 1-12.
  • Brandi Cain, John Clark, and David Rose, Vertically rigid functions, Real Analysis Exchange , 31 (2005/2006), 1-4.

Additional information about some of the most recent student research projects and summer internship experiences of FSC mathematics and computer science students is available on the News page.

Please read the department's Meet the Faculty web page to learn about faculty research interests. If you are interested in discussing the possibilities for an undergraduate research experience with a specific faculty member, please contact that faculty member directly.
