Who is an Honors Program student?

The students in the Honors Program at FSC do not fit easily into one mold! They represent practically every major; they come from across the country; they're involved in all sorts of college organization. But there are three things they essentially have in common:

Academic Talent:

The students who are invited to participate in the program possess some of the highest high school grade point averages and highest SAT and ACT scores among the entering class of the College. The average combined SAT score of the Freshmen participating in the 2005-2006  class of Honors students was 1290, while the ACT scores of these students averaged 29. All of the students in this class maintained high school grade point averages above 3.5, and most took many of their high school classes in Honors or Advanced Placement sections of their curricula.

Once at Florida Southern, the students are the ones who excel in the classroom. Our program requires students to have a 3.5 grade point average by the time they're juniors, and they must maintain that average until graduation. Such is a challenge for students at FSC - but such is the norm for students in the Honors Program.

A Love of Challenge:

Students in the Honors Program love a good intellectual challenge. They do more in the classroom because they recognize that the goal of a true education is more than "knowing the book"; it's about pushing boundaries, exploring the unexplored, taking intellectual risks. That's the sort of student we seek: not just "smart kids" but ones excited about learning and who are not satisfied with "going through the motions" of meeting minimal graduation requirements. We desire students who enjoy healthy debate and want to participate in interactive group discussions--who enjoy good scholarly conversations.

A Desire to Get Involved:

Honors students act in plays with the Florida Southern Vagabonds, play in concerts with the Symphony Band or Orchestra, play intercollegiate sports, run for student government offices, and engage in all the extra-curricular opportunities available to other students at Florida Southern College. We have intentionally avoided the temptation to single out Honors students and isolate them from the rest of the College community. We believe Honors students are Florida Southern students, and we encourage them to become active in the life of the campus. We focus on the ways the Honors experience can supplement and enrich the academic life of these academically gifted students.
