Through a number of environmentally friendly initiatives, Florida Southern College is making the Earth a cleaner and healthier place to live every day. Among our efforts to “go green,” we are working to:
Eliminate waste. By eliminating cafeteria trays, we save water used to wash the trays and electricity to heat that water. In addition, the elimination of trays has led to less food being wasted. Food waste is also “recycled” – as food for pigs living on a local farm!
Recycle it. Wellness & Recreation collects recyclable paper and plastics from all over campus. Shredded paper from campus offices also is recycled.
Conserve energy. Evening Program and summer school classes are “clustered” in as few buildings as possible to save energy on lights and air conditioning. The College has replaced most light bulbs on campus with more energy-efficient ones.
Charge it. Most of our golf carts run on electricity with rechargeable batteries.
Stay parked. We encourage people to walk or ride bikes on short trips, so there are eight bikes available for students, faculty, and staffers to “check out” at no charge at the Wellness Center. Helmets and locks are available, too.
Sustain it. Last fall, the College built Lynn’s Garden, a LEED-certified garden. Lynn’s Garden uses sustainable designs, recycled materials, and native plant species.
Save water. We use water from the Water Dome to help irrigate the landscape when the Water Dome is periodically emptied for maintenance.
