Florida
Southern’s legendary president from 1925 to 1957, Dr. Ludd M.
Spivey transformed a struggling Southern College into the modern
educational institution that today is Florida Southern College.
His charismatic leadership increased student enrollment and
inspired hundreds of alumni and friends to believe and invest in
the College, rescuing it from near closure during the Great
Depression. Dr. Spivey continued to strengthen the College’s
fiscal foundation while defining its progressive educational
mission and goals, solidifying the College’s relationship with
the United Methodist Church and inviting the innovative
architect Frank Lloyd Wright to build a “great education temple”
on the shores of Lake Hollingsworth. Dr. Spivey’s courage,
vision, and guidance initiated Florida Southern’s development
into an institution that today is recognized nationally for
providing an exceptional and unique educational experience.
Established in 2002 to honor Dr. Spivey, the Spivey Society
is a recognition society for donors who make annual unrestricted
leadership gifts to Florida Southern College. Spivey Society
members are valued partners in Florida Southern’s pursuit of
excellence and their support provides the fiscal foundation
necessary to enable the College to fulfill its educational
mission.

THE
SPIVEY SOCIETY:
THE CORNERSTONE OF ANNUAL GIVING
The Spivey Society is the cornerstone of the
College’s annual fundraising program, and the importance of
members’ gifts is unparalleled. These gifts allow the College to
respond to opportunities to enhance educational offerings and
are used to fund scholarships, student life programs, new
academic initiatives, faculty professional development, library
acquisitions, technology upgrades, and facilities maintenance.
Each year, Florida Southern relies on leadership gifts from
Spivey Society members as the principal source of the
unrestricted funds required to meet the College’s priority needs
and to provide students with excellent educational preparation
to lead successful, productive lives.
Unrestricted gifts at Spivey Society levels have
a tremendous impact on Florida Southern’s quality and financial
well being. A $1,000 gift provides the equivalent annual income
of a $20,000 endowment; similarly, a $25,000 gift is equivalent
to the annual revenue generated by a $500,000 endowment.
